100th Kernel Code Reading Party
2009年10月23日(金)
100th Kernel Code Reading Party - Japanese Linux enthusiasts have deepened friendships with kernel hackers.

This week, 2009 Linux Kernel Summit and Japan Linux Symposium are taking place in Tokyo and so many Linux kernel hackers are gathering in those events from across the world. Unfortunately, I myself couldn't attend the events, but there was a good opportunity to talk with some of those developers.

The 100th Kernel Code Reading Party was held by YLUG (Yokohama Linux Users Group - one of the most active LUG in Japan) last night in Akihabara, the town known as Mecca of electrics and cybercultures in Japan and many attendee of the events showed up for the party. The funny thing is that the party for Linux enthusiasts took place on the same day, when Windows 7 released. :-P

Over 100 persons were gathering in the party and there I could see an unexpected and surprising guest - Linus Torvalds ! It was the first time for me and most of the Japanese participants to meet and talk with real Linus, so that a tight-knit circle was formed around him during the party.

There I could also see persons from Novell (Greg Kroah-Hartman, James Bottomly and Takashi Iwai), with whom I talked a lot about openSUSE. Greg and James are so pleased when I introduced myself that I'm one of the Members of openSUSE project and a part of the marketing team, Weekly News team and openFATE screening team. Takashi and I were talking about the M17N project and how we can increase Japanese contributers.

Although the party itself was casual and informal, there were 2 talk sessions. One of them was titled 'Linux in Japan - a brief history' by Ko Kazaana, who is one of the members of Japanese translation sub team for openSUSE Weekly News. And one more thing I have to report is, that the party was sponsered by Novell, therefore, all participants could eat and drink free of charge ! As a part of openSUSE community, I was very happy and proud of those things. :-)
