WE8A PACIFIC TRIP 2011
WE8A/KH0 will be active.
Kobe International Radio Club members have offered financial aid to an organization currently helping earthquake victims.
WE8A will QRV on the island of Saipan from March 30 through early April, 2011. Kirk will be operating from 80m through 6m. WE8A/KH0 will focus on WARC SSB and CW. The operation will begin at about 17:30 UTC on March 30.
During the KH2 operation in 2008, Kirk did not use a PC logging, so found 9 DUPES later. To avoid these dupes, he will take a PC next time. Please do not call him on the same band and mode, gentlemen for the sake of others who have never worked KH0. Just give them more chance to work KH0.
QSL information
WE8A/KH0 : Direct Only to JA QSL address with sufficient return postage. (One valid IRC or 2GS)
PSE do not send to the USA. For further information, PSE see QRZ.com
Operating Frequencies for CW on WARC bands will be : 10,106MHz (+ up), 18,071MHz (+ up), and 24,901MHz (+ up). (All of them plus / minus QRM, of course)

Working New Chinse Operators on Phone
I have worked many new operators in BY land on SSB. Since I live in JA, it is quite easy to work them. I have found some interesting points while I was working them.
#1 Their Favorite Frequency on 20m.
Many Chinese monitor 14,270MHz. (This is because the 3rd Class Operators are allowed to opearte only above 14,250MHz.) Therefore, I hear MNI CQs and QRM there. When no trafic, I call CQ in Chinese like "CQ Zhong Guo (China) .." This is because many of them hesitate to call English CQ. Actually, some seem to avoid calling non-BY stations!
#2 They need to work as many stations as possible.
To upgrade or to take the next step exam, they need to collect QSL cards, so sometimes they send me their QSL with SAE. I try to reply as early as possible.
#3 Beginners' Prefixes
BG or BH are the prefixes allocated to the beginners.
BD is for the 2nd Class Operators.
BA is for the 1st Class (BY Extra Class) Operators.
I have worked about 100 BGs and BHs.
It is fun to work them in my limited Chinese. Let's call them to welcome new hams to the ham community.

7,777 DX QSOs
I made the 7,777th DX QSO in the 21st century with a BA QRP station on January 30th, 2011.
The band breakdown of QSOs is as follows:
40m : 1,455
20m : 2,759
17m : 1,363
15m : 1,470
12m : 169
10m : 443
6m : 118
TOTAL DX QSOs : 7,777
Since the beginning of this year, the propagation on high bands has been very poor. Therefore, I could make DX QSOs mostly on 20m. band. (plus 35 QSOs in 2011) However, on 15m. and above, I worked only 8 QSOs. I hope the propagation on higher bands will improve soon.

My 21st Century DX QSOs
I use a PC logging in my shack in Kobe. However, I lost all of the QSO data before 1995 because of the Hanshin Great Earthquake.
I put all my QSO data in the PC log after 1996, but the hard disk of my PC was broken and lost the data. I tried to input the data again and I have saved all the QSO data after January 1, 2001, so my PC QSO data is my "21st century version"! I summerized my DX QSO data.
DX QSOs made in the 21st century
(from January 1, 2001 till December 31, 2010)
40m : 1,441
20m : 2,724
17m : 1,348
15m : 1,464
12m : 169
10m : 441
6m : 118
TOTAL DX QSOs : 7,705
(About 770 DX QSOs per year, about 2,1 DX QSOs/day with a DP or a 2ele. mini beam for WARC bands)
N.B. The number of QSOs above is made with my personal call sign here in JA3, not with our club station call sign. The QSOs with Minamitorishima and Ogasawara stations are counted as DX QSOs. About 30 QSOs with JA stations are in the data due to world wide contests I took part in and worked JAs as an entity or a multiplier.

DXing in 2010
High-band condx has not improved yet. I chose ten DX stations I worked in Kobe in 2010.
In January, OY3AA (40 CW)
In February, TX4T (17 CW, 12 CW), ZZ6Z (20 SSB)
In March, 5N7M (20 CW)
In April, ZS10WSC (20 SSB)
In September, K1IK (17 CW) (State of Vermont)
In October, OJ0B (17 CW), GP0STH (17 CW), HC8A (15 SSB)
In November, ZL8X (6-band SSB and 6-band CW)
★About recent DXing from a caller's point of view★
As many of you have noticed that there are several styles of operating on the side of DX stations. For example, the ones who concentrate on CW (or ONLY CW), or no active operation on weekends when people who have a job on weekdays cannot have a chance to call them, or too much pay attention to ONLY a certain continent even when not open to that region, or on the contrary, the ones who operate 24-hour basis with a lot of experienced operators. I think we should learn THEIR style to work them. The 2nd type underlined above is the most difficult DX stations for me to work. Of course, I know this all depends on their side, but I would like them to think about this fact a bit. In 2010, ZL8X was the best team who gave the most opportunities (the number of QSOs/bands/Modes) to even small antenna stations I believe. I would like to give them a big applause !

The result of the contest was announced this early December.
I received the First Prize in the call district this year, too. (Category : All Bands Phone and CW QRP)
The result was 100 x 33 = 3,300 points
The E sporadic propagation on 6m. was not good this year, either. It seems that the number of participants is decreasing year by year.

5W0KI is my Samoan amateur radio call sign. This call was issued first in July, 1996. Also I got this call again in July, 2006 when I visited there for the 2nd time.
The Samoan license authority seems to issue the same call sign if the applicant had a call sign in the past. The suffix of the visitor's call sign is usually his/her initials of the name. If the same suffix is already issued to other person, they change this rule a bit. One of the team operators had the suffix consisting of his first and middle name initials, not his last name.
The following is 5W0KI's QSO DATA in 2006.
(BAND: PH, CW, TOTAL)
75m: 12, --, 12
40m: 16, 27, 43

20m: 213, 241, 454
17m: 1062, 445, 1507
15m: 140, 53, 193
12m: 102, 2, 104
10m: 4, 1, 5
TOTAL: (PH)1549, (CW)912, (TOTAL)2461
I focused on Phone, especially on 17m band since the other operators focused on CW and low bands.

I have been interested in amateur radio DXing since late 1980's after I received JCC-500 Award on 50MHz SSB of JARL.
(No more domestic, but more international contacts, I thought at that time.) I think it very wonderful to make contacts with stations abroad to learn more about foreign countries through ham radio. The following is about some of my DXing in 2009. These QSOs were made with my station in the downtown area of Kobe. The maximun power is only 200W and the antenna for regular bands (40m-10m) is a vee dipole and a dual bander yagi for 17m and 12m.

I have been a ham radio operator since 1976. I received my first amateur radio station license in February, 1977 in JA.
I took my first FCC exam in Tokyo in early 1990s. Soon after I got my first FCC ticket, I operated my favorite band, 6 meter band, in Guam. I also operated in the United States in 1993. First in Orange County, California and then in several other parts of the U.S.A., I had many opportunities to use my US license also in other countries. I operated as HB9/KG8DS in Zurich, Switzerland and as KH8/KG8DS on Ofu Island in American Samoa. I kept KG8DS for some time even after I passed the Extra Class exam, but I prefer a shorter call sign, so I decided to change my call to 1x2 or 2x1. As WE8A, my very first QSO was made in Chicago, IL and then I also chose the same place - Guam again to operate HF. From KH2, I made more than 1,100 QSOs with mostly EU, JA and NA for only two days. (PSE see my QSL photo)
(NEXT ACTIVITY as WE8A)
Probably, I will QRV as WE8A/KH0 in March, 2011 or a bit later. I hope to see you then on a ham band.

This is one of the major contests in JA. The Category I chose was X50P which means Phone & CW 50MHz QRP (5W max.).
I used FT-817 plus a 2ele. beam (HB9CV). My contest shack is located on the top of a hill, about 300m. above sea level.
The result was 113 Qs x 19 multipliers = 2,147 points
I received the 3rd Prize in Japan in this Category.
Since I usually have to work on Saturday during this contest time, I am afraid that I will not be in this contest next year.
